Setting Foundations with Data Governance and Data Modelling

When the World Veterinary Environmental Alliance wanted to create a database to help them manage their collaborations, information on their supporters and all the ways they were involving people, they decided to put in some strong foundations that would set them up well for the future.  Green Data and Insights was engaged to:

-          Create a Data Model for the information which would be held in the database, which can be used by Business Users as well as Technical Team Members to see what’s in the database and what information is held about different things.  This used a range of traditional modelling techniques and helps show how the things Business Users talk about can be found in the Data Tables

-          Create a Data Privacy Policy for publication on the website which complies with Australian legislation, as well as other key legislations like GDPR, and considers the different privacy needs of members found in countries all over the world

-          A Data Governance Framework with guidance on achieving a higher level of Data Maturity, and a manual on the procedures required to create and maintain high standards of data, to help in achieving the organisations goals.

Applying data for wildlife's benefit

Bat Conservation and Rescue Queensland (BCRQ) is a voluntary organisation based in Brisbane who’s members are always keen to try and improve people’s perceptions of bats. Although they have the chance to do this with many people who call for their helpline with a bat in trouble, and at educational talks in schools and community events, when one of their members, (Green Data Principal Consultant, Amanda Davis) put forward a successful bid for free billboard advertising for them, they jumped at the chance.

Over the peak bat rescue period from December 2024 to February 2025, BCRQ ran a campaign designed to promote positive messages about flying-foxes and microbats by showing their ecosystem benefits and their beauty, whilst also strongly communicating the Public Health message that people should not touch a bat and should call a rescue service for help.

The campaign gave members of the public over 1.2 million opportunities to see the awareness-raising and information messages – a massive reach to residents of Central Brisbane and visitors.  14 billboard locations were selected based around bat roost locations and places people most frequently came across bats needing help, the places where people were going to help a bat themselves and requiring medical attention as a result, the places where the most people would see the campaign

Data Governance - Bushfire Recovery Programme

Following the devastating bushfires of 2019/2020 many habitat restoration initiatives received funding to repair the damage thanks to Bushfire Recovery Programme. Data had been uploaded to the Atlas of Living Australia to make this information available free-of-charge to future users wanting to track progress over time, or for research purposes. Green Data and Insights was engaged to create a Data Governance Framework and roadmap to ensure this would be possible

Fundraising optimisation

A review of donations received by a wildlife conservation charity and the ask amount prompts used in their fundraising channels identified different groups of supporters based on their giving patterns. Changes were made to the ask amounts to encourage slightly higher levels of giving.
